Abstract

To accurately position the Nogais on the ethnocultural map of Eurasia, it is essential to understand their ethnic and cultural roots. One of the key questions that can help in this matter is the continuity of the Nogais with Western or Eastern Kipchaks. Purpose and Objectives of the Study. The aim of this study is to determine the accuracy of associating the Nogais with Western or Eastern Kipchaks and their continuity. Within this framework, an attempt has been made to analyze the material and spiritual culture of the Nogais by comparing it with that of the Western Kipchaks, as well as to draw parallels in tribal composition, population genetics, and anthropology. Materials and Methods. A wide range of scholarly works has been utilized, including studies of Cuman and Nogai culture, tribal structures, genetic research findings, as well as materials from anthropology and craniology. Novelty of the Research. This is a continuation of the first comprehensive study on the Nogais' affiliation with either Western or Eastern Kipchaks. For the first time, the features of Cuman and Nogai costumes are compared. Three branches of the "Kipchak" Y-DNA haplogroup have been identified. An attempt has been made to compile a correspondence table of Nogai and Cuman clans. Results. A wide range of narratives confirms the concept of the Nogais as direct descendants of the Cuman population of the Western Desht-i Kipchak. They have preserved its cultural features, tribal and genetic continuity, as well as anthropological characteristics.
